The physical environment category represents where individuals live, work and play, and their interaction with this space. Topics in this category are air and water quality, climate change and housing and transit. This is one of five categories that make up the America’s Health Rankings model. The other four categories are behaviors, social and economic factors, clinical care and health outcomes. This model is built upon the World Health Organization’s definition of health: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Our model reflects that determinants of health directly influence health outcomes.

Current Reports

America’s Health Rankings builds on the work of the United Health Foundation to draw attention to public health and better understand the health of various populations. Our platform provides relevant information that policymakers, public health officials, advocates and leaders can use to effect change in their communities.

We have developed detailed analyses on the health of key populations in the country, including women and children, seniors and those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, in addition to a deep dive into health disparities across the country.
